The Thames: Arresting Ecosystem Decline and Building Back Better
نویسندگان
چکیده
The Thames is an iconic river of cultural and historical importance. A cyclical process deterioration during the last two centuries, followed by technology-driven restorations, including major sanitation projects with a third currently underway, has produced detrimental effects on ecosystem. This paper overviews ecology, pollution other anthropogenic pressures, which lead to biodiversity loss proliferation non-native, pollution-tolerant species. article further reviews past current management, sampling assessments trends provides objective overview remediation, restoration monitoring needs, practices research gaps. Here, we argue that work, if maladapted, can be ineffective in improving resilience or have unexpected side make matters worse rather than better. We explain need for broader view management consideration species transplants achieving overall sustainability against backdrop accelerating change Anthropocene.

Building Better Traffic Ecosystem through Balanced Navigation - Concept and Practice
With state-of-the-art vehicular navigation systems still devoted to sensing accurate traffic conditions, their routing strategy only achieves suboptimal result since, in face of congestion, navigation systems tend to greedily shift all traffic to previously light-traffic roads and causes new traffic jams. In this talk, present Themis, a cloud based vehicle navigation system that adopts a differ...

TRANSGENIC INSECTS can be given new characteristics, as illustrated by these five Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. Normal individuals have what appear to be black eyes, the result of large amounts of red pigment. A mutant version of Ae. aegypti has white eyes because of the lack of an enzyme, kynurenine hydroxylase, required to synthesize the red pigment. This white-eyed condition can be altered via t...
متن کاملBuilding a better foundation: improving root-trait measurements to understand and model plant and ecosystem processes.
Trait-based approaches provide a useful framework to investigate plant strategies for resource acquisition, growth, and competition, as well as plant impacts on ecosystem processes. Despite significant progress capturing trait variation within and among stems and leaves, identification of trait syndromes within fine-root systems and between fine roots and other plant organs is limited. Here we ...
متن کاملBuilding Ecosystem-Aware Tools Using the Ecosystem Monitoring Framework
Integrating ecosystem data into developer tools can be very beneficial but is usually complicated. By automating the routine parts of this task we can reduce the amount of work needed to develop these tools. We have developed a framework that allows developers to quickly develop new tools that use ecosystem data. This framework automates the execution of user-defined analyses on ecosystem proje...
متن کاملHabitat loss, trophic collapse, and the decline of ecosystem services.
The provisioning of sustaining goods and services that we obtain from natural ecosystems is a strong economic justification for the conservation of biological diversity. Understanding the relationship between these goods and services and changes in the size, arrangement, and quality of natural habitats is a fundamental challenge of natural resource management. In this paper, we describe a new a...
